2020 has been a year like no other and with more of us staying at home during the Christmas period, I want to remind everyone of the six simple steps to take if they smell gas at home.

Call us immediately on Freephone 0800 111 999. We’re available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and will send out an engineer to keep you and your property safe.

Turn off all your gas appliances. If possible, switch off the gas at the meter (unless the meter is in the cellar or basement, in which case don’t go in).

Open all your windows and doors.

Do not use any electrical appliances. This includes switching lights on and off.

Do not smoke or use naked flames.

If there’s a smell of gas in a cellar or basement don’t go in.Please wait outside or with a neighbour.

If an engineer needs to visit your home we’ll ask you to let us know if you, or anyone in your household, is experiencing coronavirus symptoms or self isolating. We’ll still come and help you: but our teams will take some additional precautions to keep us all safe.

Amid the uncertainty of coronavirus, I’d like to reassure people that the UK gas network is one of the most reliable in the world. As we approach the festive season, our engineers are continuing to work hard to keep the gas flowing to ensure you are kept safe and warm at home.

May I take this opportunity to wish your readers a safe and happy new year.
