HIGH winds have begun to sweep through Aberystwyth again as Storm Jake arrives, bringing a mixture of high winds, rain, sleet and snow – spelling difficult conditions for drivers.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind, with gusts of up to 70mph predicted on the coastline, and has warned locals to be aware of possible disruptions to travel.
There is also a weather warning in place for snow and ice for parts of the country.
The AA’s Patrol of the Year, Max Holdstock, has given some advice for people driving in this weather.
He said: “It’s a real mixed bag of weather at the moment with heavy rain, high winds, sleet, snow and hail. It certainly makes for very changeable driving conditions – it’s a case of ‘expect the unexpected’ and drive accordingly.
“Untreated roads could be slippery, so keep your distance and watch your speed, as things can go wrong very quickly on snow and ice. In heavy rain, standing water can become quite deep so keep alert and keep your speed down. Don’t drive through deep water.
“If conditions are bad, even short journeys can take significantly longer, so either delay your journey and make arrangements to travel later if you can, or allow extra time for your journey as delays can be expected. Keep listening to local radio for traffic reports and use the AA App or AA RoadWatch for live traffic news to identify delays on your route.
“And make sure your car’s windows and lights are clear of snow and frost before heading off.”
