AN ABERYSTWYTH street has been cordoned off by police after Storm Jake brought tiles crashing onto the road.

The Met Office issued yellow warnings of wind, ice and snow early this morning,Wednesday, encouraging people to be aware of gusts of wind of up to 70mph, up to 10cm of snow in places, and icy stretches on untreated roads and pavements.

Kerry Ferguson, of Redfern Property Management in Aberystwyth, was walking along Pier Street to work this morning when she came across fallen tiles on the road, and police have since cordoned off the street.

The Met Office said: “Gusts of 70mph are likely for a time, mainly around coasts, though isolated gusts in of 60-70mph are also possible inland in heavier showers.

“Showers or outbreaks of rain will turn wintry overnight, with the risk of a more prolonged spell of snowfall late in the night and during Wednesday morning, especially in the south.

“This will give a covering of snow with 1-4cm possible in places and locally 5-10cm, these higher accumulations mainly above 200m.

“Icy stretches on untreated roads and pavements are also likely to form.”Aberystwyth Community Police tweeted: "Due to high winds and the concern for public safety, roads within Aberystwyth town centre are closed."Mid Wales Travel tweeted: "Road closures: Aberystwyth Sea Front, Pier Street, Terrace Road - we have re-route all services."High Street, Cardigan, has also been closed at Pendre due to falling roof tiles. Diversions are in place via College Row.Bath Street in Aberystwyth has now been closed to the public because of roof tiles being blown off in the storm.
