A DWYFOR woman is in the running to win a national song-writing competition - following in her mother’s footsteps.

Hawys Bryn Williams, from Aberdaron, is through to the final round of Cân i Gymru.

The Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor student, working alongside her fellow composer Gwion John Williams, has entered Curiad Coll in to the esteemed musical contest, the first time either of the duo has entered.

Gwion wrote the words and Hawys composed the melody for their song which “talks about the daily battles people endure all over the world”.

Using all the technology at their disposal, the musical maestros made use of Facetime to record their thought-provoking song.

Hawys is already a member of the band Pyroclastig, which came third in Brwydr y Bandiau 2016, and has said that if she wins Cân i Gymru she will “use the money to buy a new guitar and will save the rest to go study medicine at Manchester University”.

Hawys is hoping to go one better than her mother, Nia Davies Williams, who wrote a song for the competition in 2012, sung by Lois Eifion, called Cain, which came third.

The standard of entries for Cân i Gymru 2017 is so high this year, that the competition organisers decided that 10 songs should compete for the trophy this year rather than the usual eight.

The competition will be shown on Saturday, 11 March, at 8.25pm on S4C.
