Madam,
I am writing concerning the article - Lawyer claims scurvy victim, 8, was failed by system.
I would like to add my support to solicitor Mark Dyson’s concerns over the conduct of child protection by Ceredigion County Council.
As someone who has kept a close eye on the activities of the county council I am aware of other issues with child protection in the county.
Like Mark Dyson I have tried to raise my concerns with councillors but have found a strong reluctance to even hear the evidence.
Interestingly, in the case Mark Dyson raised, the Social Services Department were aware of the child protection concerns. However, internal memos I have seen suggest that hasn’t always been the case.
The fact that a long-standing senior solicitor has raised his concerns publicly should ring alarm bells. Solicitors are not known for such radical action except in the most extreme circumstances.
Even among the bodies tasked with oversight of the councils, there is a reluctance to take on cases that potentially create a large amount of work for regulators with limited resources.
I have had this confirmed by a senior civil servant in Cardiff in the past.
Yours etc,
J W Davies, Borth.
