An Aberystwyth swimming coach has gained national recognition for his “unrivalled commitment and passion” to volunteering.

Nigel Parry, 58, has won the Swim Wales Volunteer of the Year Award 2019 after being nominated by local swimming and fellow Aberystwyth & District Amateur Swimming Club member, Cameron Phillips.

Nigel has been a member of ADASC for 18 years, occupying many roles within the club, including secretary, chair and vice-chair.

His volunteering career with ADASC began when he was watching his son, who was eight at the time, during a swimming lesson in 2002. While on the balcony watching, the coach who was working at the time, called him down due to his ‘loud voice’.

He remained on pool side with the coach watching what they were doing and has been coaching ever since.

He remains an avid swimming coach and a member of the committee.

Next week he will be attending a regional gala in Haverfordwest with other coaches and approximately 20 swimmers.

Nigel said: “I am really honoured to have won the award. The club doesn’t run without the volunteers organising things like the money. I’ve seen many people come and go, all doing the various jobs. These volunteers keep the club going.

“You have to encourage volunteers, not just in swimming, but in anything."
