A former Dolgellau college student has moulded the beginnings of a successful career in ceramics having been shortlisted for The Young Masters Art Prize.

Elin Hughes, from Dolgellau, studied a Foundation Degree in Art and Design at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor and went on to graduate with a First Class Degree in Ceramics from Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Elin is destined for great things in the world of art as she has recently been shortlisted for the 2019 Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize.

The prize is an initiative run by the Cynthia Corbett Gallery in London and has become a renowned, innovative and high-profile prize recognising how contemporary artists embrace the art of the past.

More recently, the prize was developed to celebrate excellence in contemporary ceramics.

The fifth edition was opened for entries in March.

Elin expressed her gratitude to her former college for all the help she received in getting to where she is now.

She said: “The technicians and tutors at Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor were integral in helping me develop my interest and skill in ceramics.

“Their support and encouragement to take creative risks and step out of my comfort zone led me to evolve a great deal as a maker.

“The emphasis of the college on working independently to self-manage our individual projects was also fantastic in preparing me for life at university.”

In addition to being shortlisted for this prestigious prize, Elin’s work is on display in an exhibition on this week at La Galleria, Royal Opera Arcade, London.

The exhibition attracted quite a crowd with something for everyone to enjoy, including pieces from fifteen different ceramic artists from around the world and artwork from twenty fine artists showcasing a range of different styles and techniques.

Elin added: “It’s a huge privilege to take part in this wonderful exhibition which also offers prizes to a few of the artists.”

The Young Masters People’s Choice Award has recently been opened so that the public can vote for their favourite artist.
