A Blaenau Ffestiniog woman has set up a charity to tackle period poverty.

Tara Hall has started a charity project called Cylch Coch which collects and provides local groups, clubs and schools with sanitary products and information.

The project’s aim is to tackle period taboo and poverty within our community, to help raise confident girls.

Speaking to the Cambrian News, Tara said: “One in 10 women lives in period poverty in the UK. This means one in 10 women cannot afford the amount of sanitary items they need each month.

“This may not effect all young girls but what does is the lack of access to sanitary products and information in some environments.

“No young girl should have to miss school or not be able to take part in a club because of her period.

“Cylch Coch aims to tackle the taboo that still exists around periods, so that girls feel more comfortable talking about it with others. Through supportive information and access to sanitary products we hope to instill confidence in the young girls of our communities, as well as tackle the period poverty that exists.

“You may have already spotted the Cylch Coch donation bins in local shops. We are collecting sanitary items, underwear and tights in these bins which will then be distributed to local clubs in the area.

“Where to donate? Currently we have donation bins in Blaenau Ffestiniog’s CO-OP and Eurospar, and Porthmadog’s Wilkinson and Tesco. We hope the project will grow in time to help more and more communities in Gwynedd.

“If you can’t get to a donation bin, you can donate online via our GoFundMe page www.gofundme.com/cylchcoch.”
