ABERYSTWYTH actor Taron Egerton thanked his ’mam’ as he picked up a Golden Globe in Hollywood last night (Sunday).
Taron Egerton, 30, scooped the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Musical or Comedy, for his performance in the 2019 Elton John biopic Rocketman.
On receiving the award, Taron thanked Elton for his inspiration and dedicated the award to his mother: “To Elton John, thank you for the music, thank you for living a life less ordinary, thank you for being my friend.
“Finally, oh yeah that flashing at me, my mother is in here somewhere. This one is for you mam.”
When asked whether Elton had provided any advice during the film, former Penglais pupil Taron commented: “The thing that he said to me that was really lovely, he said ‘don’t worry about sounding exactly like me, the movie is, you know, it’s inspired by Elton and Bernie’s legacy and the spirit of their story, but its hopefully very personal as well.
“And what Elton very kindly did was give me the license to, with Charles Martin, Dexter [Fletcher] and everybody else, reinvent the songs and create a character that is a kind of hybrid of him and me.
“Because it’s a very personal situation that the character finds themselves in; this journey of recovery in a therapy room.”
Elton John and Bernie Taupin also won Best Original Song with their song I’m Gonna Love Me Again, which was created for the film.
