A NEFYN teacher is flying high after one of his birds was voted the UK’s Champion Waterfowl 2017.

The National Poultry Championship Show held by The Poultry Club at the International Centre, Telford, attracted more than 6,000 birds and is the UK’s largest poultry show bringing together poultry breeders from Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England.

Rhys Llewelyn, a teacher from Nefyn and the founder of Parêd Dewi Sant Pwllheli, competed with his Welsh Brecon Buff geese, Welsh Harlequin ducks and Welsh Magpie ducks.

One of Rhys’ geese managed to get Best Light Goose/Gander and Champion Goose, before beating all other Champion Waterfowl breeds to become the show’s Champion Waterfowl and Best of Breed.

There were 600 waterfowl at the show and in total Rhys had five first prizes in five different classes.

By coincidence, the Brecon Buff breed was created in 1929 by Rhys Llewellyn from Brecon, who has no connection with winner Rhys.
