A Llanbedrog woman who didn’t know she was pregnant has spoken of her shock after giving birth in Asda car park in Pwllheli.
Delyth Jones and Dean Stawman are the proud new parents of little Harry, who made his unexpected appearance at 1.28pm on Tuesday, 16 February.
Dean, 26, works at the store and was finishing his shift, oblivious to the drama unfolding just feet away. He only found out he was a dad when he got home as the couple had no idea Delyth, a home carer for elderly and vulnerable people, was pregnant.
When her contractions started she thought it was appendicitis. Her mum Andrea and sister Kate Jones – who also works at Asda Pwllheli – called an ambulance. When the crew arrived it was clear she was in labour.
They set off for Ysbyty Gwynedd but, unable to get there in time, stopped en-route at Asda.
And in a huge coincidence, the ambulance just happened to stop at Asda Pwllheli - where the oblivious dad-to-be Dean was working.
Delyth said the paramedics stopped there because they knew a community midwife was nearby.
Describing how the drama began, Delyth, 25, said: “I’d had pain like that before. I phoned my mum and sister. When they got there the pain changed, next thing I knew I was on the floor. Half an hour later he was born.”
Sister Kate said: “We rushed over to help because she wasn’t feeling well and we thought it was appendicitis. At one point she said, ‘I think I’m having a baby’, and we laughed. It was quite a shock when it turned out she was right!”
Delyth didn’t have time for pain relief – “just a couple of gulps of gas and air” – before Harry was born, weighing 7lbs 7oz.
They were taken to Bangor for checks, but home within 24 hours.
She said: “We were going through Pwllheli when they said we were going to have to stop. The community midwife was around and jumped in the ambulance at Asda and 10 minutes later he was delivered. I said, ‘Tell me I haven’t just given birth in Asda’ and they said I had – and it would be listed as his place of birth on his birth certificate.
“It must be fate that he was born there with our connections.
“It’s been such a whirlwind, but it’s been so good and I have absolutely loved it. I wouldn’t change any of it.”
Delyth’s mum waited for Dean to return to Asda to tell him what had happened. He was ecstatic.
“We knew we were going to have children one day, but hadn’t planned for this,” Delyth said.
“The reactions have been amazing. I love watching the shock on people’s faces when I tell them. It’s not a story you hear every day.
“We’ve got a really supportive family, and that makes a huge difference. We had nothing in, so they’ve been rushing around. We’re still trying to get some things, but we’ve got all the essentials.”
Kate said her colleagues are overjoyed and she is ecstatic.
“I think Delyth and Dean are still in shock and a bit of a state of disbelief – especially Dean,” she said.
“It’s wonderful though. It’s all been a bit doom and gloom recently with everything going on in the world, so it’s given us something to smile about.”
Delyth is a carer for Cymorth Llaw who have been amazing and said to take as much time off as she likes. She’s worked for them for almost eight years.
Asda, where Dean has worked for almost four months, have also been great.
Dean said: “Thanks to our family, friends and both our employers who have been really supportive.”
The couple described Harry as “perfect” and say he only wakes them up once a night.
