STAFF at Tesco in Aberystwyth have played charity football matches against teams from Bronglais Hospital and their retail rivals Marks and Spencer and Morrisons.

The M&S match, played at Aberystwyth Town FC’s Park Avenue pitch and won by Tesco 7-1, raised more than £600 for local and national charities.

Tesco then beat Morrisons 5-4 in a match which raised a further £648.15.

But the Tesco team came a cropper when they played a team from Bronglais Hospital, losing 2-0, but £841 was raised.

Ruth’s kitchen provided meals for all the players for a £1 donation, Aberystwyth Women’s Team loaned their footballs, the referees, linesmen, stewards, security, first-aiders and ball boys and girls, who all donated their time free of charge.

The games were the idea of Tesco Community Champion Natasha Worrall and, in total, £2,096 was raised for Diabetes UK, British Heart Foundation, Clic Sergeant, Mind, Pila Pala and Llwyn yr Eos.

Team Tesco are now looking for more opponents to play and raise more money for local charities.
