Mr Oliver rightly protests about being compelled to pay for private treatment for his cataract operation (Views, 29 July), but I would respectfully question the cause he identifies.
Just a little travel reveals how big this world is, and it was calculated 40 years ago that if every family in the world had seven acres of land, that would not exhaust the land in North America.
Those that own most of the land in Britain, a tiny minority, are happy to sustain the myth of overpopulation, it takes the focus off their greed, and they have been shifting that focus for a long time.
The Mercator world map is around 400 years old, and Africa, South America, India, and other colonial lands are shown to be much smaller than their true world size.
As a retired nurse told me, as we sat on a London park seat in the 1960s: “ I spent most of my life in India, and when I returned to England I looked about me and wondered where all that wealth had gone.”
That same minority is still at work, trying to ensure greed prevails by reversing any collective social gains, particularly the NHS, as they attempt to eviscerate general social medicine in the same way as NHS dentistry. The electorate must wake up and smell the coffee!
