PROTESTERS descended on Aberystwyth today for a third Kill the Bill demonstration.
Ceredigion MP Ben Lake was one of the speakers at the event which saw crowds of people marching through the town.
Also speaking was Camilla Mngaza, Siyanda Mgnaza’s mother from the Free Siyanda campaign.
This is the third protest of its kind in Aberystwyth. The second was on 17 April and the first on 3 April.
Protestors gathered at the clock tower at 1pm in Aberystwyth, before marching through the town and ending at the castle, where various speakers addressed the crowd.
The protest is against the recently introduced Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. The draft law has drawn particular controversy as, if passed, it would “allow police to criminalise anyone using civil disobedience and direct action tactics”.
Speaking before the event, a spokesperson for the protest said on Facebook: “Our theme for this Saturday’s #KillTheBill march in Aberystwyth is Celebrating Protest.
“We are inviting people to attend the march and rally dressed as historical protestors and/or carrying placards or banners from those protests - for example the Rebecca Rioters, the Suffragettes, the Merthyr Rising, Anti Corn Law League, Chartism.
“We would also like to see contemporary progressive protests represented - possibly Cardiff Peace March, Greenham Women, Welsh Language Protests, Save Tryweryn campaign, Save Aberystwyth Post Office campaign, Striking Miners (no blackface please!), Save Bodlondeb campaign.
“If you participated in any of these please bring your banners and placards!
“Alternatively, come in your brightest and most colourful carnival clothes - let’s show our government that we will kill this bill before they kill our joyfulness and #RightToProtest!”
