Driving home for Christmas tomorrow? The Met Office is warning people to stay safe as they issue a thunderstorm warning for much of west and south Wales.

Anyone hoping for a white Christmas this year is set to be disappointed with temperatures expected to be mild, but the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across most of south and west Wales, up to Aberystwyth, on Tuesday morning from 5am until 1pm.

Rain, hail, lightning and squally winds in association with thunderstorms are likely to cause some impacts to travel during Christmas Eve morning according to the warning. 60mph winds are also possible.

The Met Office says there is a probability of some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes.

A spokesperson added: "There is a good chance driving conditions will be affected by spray, standing water and/or hail, leading to longer journey times by car and bus.

"Delays to train services are possible.

"Some short-term loss of power and other services is likely."

Heavy showers and some thunderstorms are expected to move east during Tuesday morning. These will contain hail, which could briefly cover roads, a risk of lightning and also squally winds with gusts of 60 mph possible.
