With regard to your article in last week’s edition of the Cambrian News (Meirionnydd edition), ‘Councillor quits after row over clerk’s role and pay’, I would like to salute the councillor concerned, Quentin Deakin.
Thank goodness we have at least two community councillors who have the integrity to stand up for what they believe in.
What a smack in the face for all those struggling with the benefits system when a community clerk can earn £33,000.
Furthermore, One Voice Wales offers training for all councillors and chairpeople as well as the clerk’s role; why then have full training for councillors if part of their role and decisions are being given to the clerk to finalise?
The clerk is there for clerical and administration purposes, certainly not for decision making.
I would also question why a clerk for one community council can also carry out the clerk’s role in another community council? I am sure there are residents within our communities who would love to take on the role of clerk to the council, if ever a vacancy arose. It is time for a shake-up of community councils.
