A CONTROVERSIAL bypass scheme for Llanbedr is due to be discussed by Gwynedd’s top councillors next week.

The plan to build a new road around Llanbedr has stirred fierce debate in the community, with the pro-bypass and anti-bypass residents at loggerheads for years.

The scheme was initially proposed as far back as 1953, as traffic can quickly build up in the village during the tourist season, especially at the town’s ancient bridge which can become a ‘pinch-point’.

There are also concerns about a lack of proper pavements, which can endanger pedestrians walking through the village.

A lack of suitable access roads leading to Llanbedr Airfield, now known as Snowdonia Airspace Centre, is another issue, and is potentially stopping further investment in the area.

Snowdonia Airspace Centre representative Lee Paul outlined the importance of ongoing investment.

“We know that traffic through the village of Llanbedr can be gridlock at times, which is why we’re working with Gwynedd Council,” he said.

“Better access combined with our future development plans for the site is important in generating investor confidence in Llanbedr.”
