BRITAIN’S biggest cycle race will go through Llanidloes, it has been announced.

The Tour of Britain, which brings some of the world’s best cyclists to the UK between 4 and 11 September, will pass through Llanidloes on Wednesday, 7 September.

Speaking to the Cambrian News this week, Cllr Gareth Morgan said he was pleased the race would be returning to Llanidloes for the first time since 2013, saying it will be positive for both local schoolchildren and the local economy.

“There is a huge amount of excitement, particularly amongst the young,” Cllr Morgan said. “I will be encouraging the headteachers of both local schools to allow the students to watch it coming through the town.

“It is about encouraging young people to do likewise and stay fit and healthy, and hopefully inspire them to take up sport such as cycling.

“It is also very good for the local economy as it is bound to attract a lot of people from the surrounding area.”

Cllr Morgan added: “Hopefully once the cyclists have passed through, the spectators will stay around to sample our great local cafes and restaurants.”
