Editor,
As you know the new coronavirus epidemic is threatening to overwhelm the NHS.
I am concerned about the seasonal influx of tourists from England. Especially now that schools have closed.
Birmingham and the West Midlands are showing lots of cases of the virus. As a result, many are escaping to Mid and West Wales to isolate.
I have heard of and seen many people in the shops and on the pavements not keeping to the social distancing that medical specialists say we need to maintain. Admittedly, I do not know if all of them are tourists but the sheer volume of people is making social distancing difficult for concerned locals and visitors alike.
Bronglais Hospital is relatively small, yet it serves a vast area of Wales. A spike in cases here will rapidly overwhelm our wonderful staff.
Tourist venues such as hotels and caravan parks need to be closed!
This will hit many businesses but the governments in London and Cardiff are acting as quickly as possible to save them. If you own a business that will be affected (most in Mid Wales), sorry, but this is a case of life and death or serious disability.
Specialists are saying that social distancing may need to be maintained for at least 12 months. With this in mind the Eisteddfod should be cancelled now.
