Residents in Nefyn are being forced to leave town in order to withdraw cash for free.
This comes after changes in the last few weeks to the two ATM machines in the town, one at the Spar shop and one at Premier Nefyn, which now charge customers 99p to withdraw money.
The nearest bank to Nefyn is in Pwllheli, almost seven miles away. For people reliant on the bus, this means paying £3 for a day ticket or pay the 99p charge to use one of the cashpoints in Nefyn.
Cllr Gruffydd Williams, who represents Nefyn, has said that most people he has spoken to about the change have said its “disgusting”.
He said: “The people who are worst off are always worst affected. I know someone who has £25 every two weeks to spend on food. For someone in that position, being charged 99p every time you draw money out is a lot.
“It’s the cost of a loaf of bread, which is daylight robbery. The shopkeepers had no say in it, the decision was made elsewhere.”
Cllr Williams added: “It’s another indicator that the Welsh Government needs to get together a national bank order to back Wales.
Ashley Hughes owns the Premier store in the town. He told the Cambrian News that he is completely against the move but added that there is nothing he can do to stop NoteMachine.
