NEW Quay residents say they are fed up with being surrounded by “a sea of rubbish” during holiday periods.
Locals spoke up this week over what they claim is the indiscriminate dumping of rubbish by people who own or let some of the town’s many holiday homes.
“Over the Easter bank holiday weekend the benches in Upland Square had at least eight bags of rubbish dumped or fly-tipped near them,” resident Mervyn Jones told the Cambrian News.
“Now the tourist season is upon us, the residents of New Quay have another year where people with holiday homes and people renting holiday homes find it okay to dump their rubbish wherever they like.
Mr Jones said he was convinced that the majority of the culprits were not local.
Local builder Tomos Boyle said the problem was worsening.
"The council workers on rubbish duties walk past it on the floor and if it’s not in the bin then it will stay there - why can’t they carry litter-pickers with them?" he said.
“Aberaeron has Maurice Horton, the road sweeper, who is a major asset to the town.
“I hope people in Aberaeron realise what a good thing they have because New Quay is a perfect example of what happens without a Maurice.”
A Ceredigion County Council spokesman said: “As part of Caru Ceredigion the authority encourages the public to play a proactive positive role in making good and proper use of the services and facilities it provides, which includes dealing with their waste responsibly."
