I wholeheartedly agree with Dr Angie Polkey when she states the US-UK trade deal “has the power to change our lives forever and for the worse”(Letters, 22 October). Furthermore, the impact on Welsh communities would be disproportionate as we have many small, family farms.
I think we should be proud of the farm-to-fork standards delivered by Welsh farmers, yet there is a risk that these will be undermined by a trade deal allowing low quality, low price food, produced from poor standards of animal welfare, into our market.
The trade deal has little to do with tariffs but much to do with redistributing power to multinational corporations. The US position on nutritional labelling means the consumer might not be able to see any difference except price. There is a risk of locally produced food becoming uncompetitive.
If Welsh farming is not viable, there is a serious risk to Welsh culture and language. Stop the US trade deal!
