Hurray for traffic-free streets in Aberystwyth! It has taken nearly 50 years to achieve! One can walk around relaxed, not worrying about tripping over dogs, avoiding groups of people talking etc on the narrow pavements.
Without it, one has to go into the road to avoid them, in front of possible traffic hazards!
It is particularly difficult in streets like Chalybeate Street. When traffic is present, one struggles to negotiate pavements, particularly for wheelchairs, pushchairs or even just walking. There are over ten large obstacles on the pavement between the travel agents and the hairdressers! It is nice to see cafés having tables outside where one can sit and have a coffee (weather permitting). Perhaps if traffic-free was continued, we could have a weekly market there as well? Then other things like street theatre etc can be considered to help rejuvenate Aber.
Has anyone else noticed that the air is much purer in Great Darkgate Street now? One realises how much traffic pollution we have been breathing in for years!
The rejuvenation of town centres not only depends on a good range of shops, reasonable nearby parking, but also a pleasant ambience where people can walk, talk and shop relaxed.
Most towns now have trafficfree zones so why not Aber? It is even more essential in 2020, particularly with the imminent influx of 10,000 students.
Like the M&S story, where the shop was excluded from Aber for many years, when it came, we realised what an asset it is. Wake up Aber and join the 21st century!
