SAFETY concerns have been raised over a traffic island located on a busy street in Porthmadog.

The traffic island, which was placed as a traffic calming measure on New Street, has been damaged, which complainants say is because the road is too narrow.

Porthmadog county councillor Jason Humphreys is calling for the traffic island to be removed immediately for safety reasons.

He said: “These traffic islands have been controversial ever since they were installed some 10 years ago.

“I know that my predecessor, Ieuan Roberts, presented a petition from New Street residents to have something done about them back then, but he was flatly ignored by officers.

“The fact that they quite recently removed one from Madog Street, where there was no support for doing so was very surprising."

A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “The council has scheduled work to remove two small traffic islands on New Street for next week. The site has been made safe with safety fencing."
