TRAVELLERS who set up camp on Ysgol Penweddig’s playing field were served notice to vacate the site by Ceredigion County Council officers.
While the school is on holiday for the summer break, a council spokesperson said officers commenced talks with the group, as the site is unauthorised.
A council spokesperson last week said: “A group of Gypsies and/or travellers arrived in Aberystwyth on the evening of Wednesday, 25 July, and have set up an unauthorised camp at the Ysgol Gyfun Gymunedol Penweddig playing fields.
“Notice was served on the travellers on the morning of Thursday, 26 July, at approximately 11.20am, and the council’s legal services have issued the necessary papers at the county court on Thursday afternoon.
“Officers from the council are in contact with the group to ensure a fair and consistent approach to dealing with unauthorised encampments, which complies with legislation to a standard that meets the needs of all involved.
“Also, to provide guidance to ensure there is a balance between the rights of the campers and local residents and businesses and to manage the potential for community tension.”
The council told the Cambrian News on Tuesday, that the caravans had left the site on Monday afternoon.
