THE next walk is scheduled for 9 July and is called ‘A weekend away walking part of Offa’s Dyke long distance path’ and the leader is Martin Pugh (01974 298989). Offa’s Dyke is a 1,200-year-old earthen boundary and is Britain’s longest archaeological monument, stretching for 129km through the Welsh borders from Treuddyn , near Wrexham, to Sedbury Cliffs on the Severn estuary in southern Gloucestershire. The surviving dyke typically consists of a bank which can be up to eight metres high associated with a deep western ditch. English Methodist Church
THE service on Sunday, 3 July, will be held in Pantyfedwen hall, Pontrhydfendigaid, at 2.30pm and will be led by Rev Roger Hides.There will not be a service in Tregaron next week. Instead, there will be a service for all the churches in the circuit held in St Paul’s Methodist Church, Aberystwyth, at 3pm.

THE lunch on Wednesday, 22 June, was held at Y Talbot and attended by 46 people, including Sarah Rochira, her assistant Helen Benjamin, three officers from Age Cymru (Annemarie Butlin, Gwyneth Jones, Simon Wright) and councillor Lyndon, who all enjoyed their lunches.The talk was given by Sarah, who is the Commissioner for Older People in Wales. She explained that she was the first such commissioner in the UK and was appointed by the First Minister under an Act of the Welsh Government.She has legal powers to question people, to review public services and government across Wales, and has right of entry to care homes.She sees herself as an independent voice for the older people of Wales.She then told us about some of her experiences when talking to people about their problems and difficulties. Sarah ended her talk by thanking all older people for raising the younger generations and paving the way for their ambitions and achievements.She made clear that she was including her family and herself in those who had benefited.The vote of thanks was given by Gwyneth Jones, who also thanked Y Talbot for the meal.The next lunch will be on Wednesday, 13 July, at The Marine Hotel in Aberystwyth. British Legion Ladies Section
THE chairman, Ann Jones, welcomed everyone back after the Christmas period.The exhortation was read in English and Welsh and a silent tribute observed.With the business part over, the chairman welcomed the speaker, Geraint Hughes of Swyddffynnon, who used to run the Pet Supplies Shop in Tregaron until he decided to retire to work as a landscape gardener.He gave a number to gardening tips on the best seeds and plants suitable for our climate, ready for the warm weather.The vote of thanks was given by Kathleen Edwards.The hostesses were Kathleen Edwards, Jane Hughes, Bethan Bennett and Marged Phillips.The raffle, given by Ann Jones, was won by Elizabeth Cameron.The Noson Gawl was celebrated at the New Inn, Llanddewi Brefi, on 16 March.The exhortation was read in English and Welsh and a silent tribute was observed.Grace was said by Lyn Gealy, and then everyone enjoyed cawl and apple tart or rice pudding followed by bara brith and Welsh cakes.The speaker was Eirwen James, who gave an interesting talk on the centenerary of the First World War. The vote of thanks was given by Elizabeth Cameron to Yvonne and her team for the delicious food, and to Eirwen.In April, members had their annual outing, organised by Pat Jones and Kathleen Edwards, to Oak Church Nursery for coffee and a light lunch before going on to Hereford for some shopping.A meal had been arranged on their return at the George Borrow Hotel in Ponterwyd which was enjoyed by everyone.The vote of thanks was given by Ann Jones to Pat and Kathleen for organising, and to the staff of the hotel for a lovely meal.
