Pilot schemes for waste collection in Aberystwyth were not supported by some local residents, a town centre councillor has said.
In efforts to improve waste services and improve the appearance of the town, Ceredigion County Council launched trial schemes to help improve waste collection, including communal bins on North Parade and strengthened bags to protect black waste bags on Cambrian Street and Moor Lane.
But Gerwyn Jones, the environmental services corporate manager, said while there had been an improvement in the appearance of North Parade as a result of the bins, there had been issues with waste put in the incorrect bins.
He added that take-up of the strengthened reusable bags in Cambrian Street and Moor Lane had been poor at an estimated 10 per cent.
Town centre councillor Ceredig Davies said the council had played its part in trying to find innovative ways to improve services, but said it required support from residents.
He said: “The biggest problem is the people who are not willing to engage with the service and how we are going to get them to abide, until we do that we are going to have a big problem.”
Cllr Davies said North Parade had a high number of student residents from across the world, some of whom only lived there short-term, and that it was needed to get landlords involved in ensuring that residents were aware of the rules in terms of waste collection.
