Tributes have been paid to an Aberystwyth Town football legend who has died.

Gwyn Thomas, a striker who played in the club’s last Welsh Amateur Cup winning side in 1970, played over 200 games, scoring 122 goals across seven seasons before returning to play for Llanfarian, his home village.

While Mr Thomas, who was nicknamed ‘Scooby Doo’, was known as a strong, tall attacker, he also showed good movement and awareness and built an impressive partnership with David ‘Dias’ Williams, considered the club’s greatest ever player.

A club statement said Mr Thomas’s passing was a sad loss to the club.

It said: “Aberystwyth Town FC extends its deepest sympathy to the family of Gwyn Thomas, who recently passed away.

"Gwyn, who was centre forward in Aberystwyth’s last Welsh Amateur Cup winning side in 1970, was the perfect old-fashioned centre forward.

"Standing well over six feet and hard as nails, he led the line ferociously giving opposing centre halves a torrid time in pursuit of more goals.

"Gwyn started his football in his home village of Llanfarian. He graduated into the Aberystwyth Town team in 1968 after winning a Welsh Youth cap against England in 1965. He went on to make 212 appearances and scored 122 goals in the next seven seasons.

“There was far more to Gwyn’s game than just dishing it out to opposition defenders. He in fact proved to be the perfect foil to David ‘Dias’ Williams, allowing him more space in the box."
