TRIBUTES have been pouring in for a record-breaking Machynlleth man described as a “pillar of the town” for his charity and community work.

Huw Lawton-Davies, a stalwart of Machynlleth football club, a dedicated fund-raiser and a former retained firefighter for over 40 years died on Saturday, 7 November, aged 89, following a short illness.

He was described by friends and family as “a fine and committed servant” who will be sadly missed.

Machynlleth Cllr Michael Williams who had known Huw “all his life” said his passing was a “great loss” for everybody in the town.

“Huw was an absolutely wonderful person who did so much for the whole of Machynlleth,” he said.

“He worked so very hard for the community in fund-raising with various charities including Cancer Research UK where I worked with him raising money for over 25 years.

“He did so much for the town, he was very much a pillar of the community and was just a tremendous person.

“He was always down to earth and had a tremendous sense of humour.

“He was an exceptional man - a real man of the people and his loss is extremely sad for everyone.”

Huw, who watched his first Machynlleth Town game aged just five, served the club for as linesman, ticket seller, line marker and chairman and was the club’s life president.

Fellow Machynlleth club president, Will Lloyd Williams said: “Huw was always involved, on the committee, volunteering and helping mark the field.

“His loss is a sad one for the town and the football club.”
