The death of a popular children’s entertainer has shocked the local community, with hundreds taking to social media to pay tribute.

Barry Riding, who was known by generations of children as Barry Wayne or the Pied Piper, worked extensively throughout the area, performing at children’s parties and entertaining holidaymakers at caravan parks for decades.

Clarach Bay Holiday Village, where Barry worked for almost 10 years, announced the popular entertainer’s death on Facebook last Thursday morning.

“It is with a heavy heart that we have learnt of the passing of our former colleague and good friend Barry Wayne,” a spokesperson said.

“The Barker & Scarrott families, along with all the staff at Clarach Bay Holiday Village would like to send his wife Linda and family our deepest condolences.”

Within hours hundreds of comments appeared on the post.

Barry had been due to perform at Glan y Môr Caravan Park on Bank Holiday Monday, 27 May, but was forced to cancel.

An announcement on the caravan park’s Facebook page on the day said: “Unfortunately Barry Wayne has had to cancel tonight’s show due to illness. He is very sorry to let you all down.”

Announcing the arrangements for Barry’s funeral, his family said he wouldn’t want “too much of a fuss”.

“Barry’s funeral will be held at Coychurch Crematorium, Bridgend, at 1.15pm on Tuesday, 9 July,” the announcement said.

“Everyone is very welcome – please do come and join us for our Dad/Barry/the Pied Piper’s last show.”

Charitable donations can be made in Barry’s memory, as the family statement explained.

“Dad loved dogs and rescued many in his time,” they said.

“He wouldn’t want flowers or too much of a fuss, but if you wanted to do something to remember him, we’re sure he would have really appreciated a donation to Dogs Trust.”
