TWO lifeboatmen who lost their lives at sea 13 years ago have been remembered, writes Alex Jones.

Barmouth RNLI has paid tribute to two lifeboat volunteers more than a decade after they lost their lives in a tragic sea incident.

Barmouth harbourmaster Keith Allday, 54, and his assistant Alan Massey, 36, were using a small boat to lay moorings in the Mawddach estuary on 5 April 2004 when they were thrown into the water during bad weather.

A massive air and sea search was launched after their vessel was found upturned. The body of Mr Allday was found by coastguards the next day.

Tributes were paid to the father-of-five during his funeral, which was attended by over 1,000 people as the search for his colleague continued.

The body of Mr Massey, who was the inshore lifeboat’s helmsman, was found three weeks after both had gone missing.

The Barmouth RNLI crew remembered the two volunteers who lost their lives in an emotional message posted by the crew on social media.

It simply said: “Today is 13 years since we lost Alan Massey and Keith Allday. We will ALWAYS remember them.”

Three years ago, the Barmouth lifeboat crew took members of Mr Allday and Mr Massey’s family out to sea to lay flowers into the water during a private event to remember the two men.
