An aircraft engineer who died after getting into difficulty off Porth Neigwl beach drowned after saving his friend’s daughter, an inquest has heard.
Beachgoers watched on as Stephen Hulsmeier was brought to shore by emergency services on 6 August.
Mr Hulsmeier, 47, was found to be unresponsive when he was brought onto the beach.
The coastguard, Welsh Ambulance Service and North Wales Police were called to the beach on following reports of three people in difficulty in the water.
Despite the best efforts from the emergency services who tried for over an hour to resuscitate Mr Hulsmeier, he died at the scene.
The inquest has been adjourned whilst further investigation takes place.
RAF Brize Norton has paid tribute to Mr Hulsmeier.
In a statement, the RAF said: “It is with sincere sadness that we announce the death of Sergeant Stephen Hulsmeier on Friday, 6 August, following a tragic accident whilst on holiday with his family and friends.
“Steve – known as Hulzi to his many friends - was a popular aircraft engineer and during his 23 years’ service he worked on many squadrons and stations, including Coltishall, Coningsby, Leuchars, Cosford and more recently Brize Norton.
“He leaves behind his wife Becky and their son; the RAF is providing support to them at this difficult time. They wish to pass on their thanks for all of the messages of support they have received so far which is providing them some comfort.”
