A SLATE trophy has been commissioned which will be handed to the best shop display window celebrating St David’s Day.
Menter Iaith Hunaniaith in partnership with Parêd Dewi Sant Llyn ac Eifionydd has commissioned a slate competition trophy, depicting a classic view of Pwllheli, to be awarded to a business with the best dressed window to celebrate St David’s Day.
The competition, now in its third year and organized to coincide with Parêd Dewi Sant, adds a splash of colour to the town at a quiet time of year.
Ifan Llewelyn Jones, language development officer with hunaniaith said: “The event enables us to visit all businesses in the town, inviting them to join the popular competition and to offer them advice and support on increasing their use of the Welsh language.”
Last year the title, and a cash prize of £50 was won by Kar a Lyns hair salon on Penlôn Llyn, Pwllheli.
Collecting the trophy from slate craftsman Mike Tanner at Llechen Llyn, Rhys Llewelyn, coordinator of Parêd Dewi Sant said: “The Parêd is all about celebrating Llyn and Eifionydd’s enduring Welshness. Each year Parêd volunteers are buoyed by the support business people of all backgrounds show by decorating their windows.”
The competition will be judged by local artist Elin Huws, who will be looking for the most inspired and artistic interpretation of Welshness.
Rhys Llewelyn added: “This will be the first year that we award a trophy in addition to the cash prize.
“We plan to continue holding the event annually, making the awarding of the trophy a key part of the celebrations on the day of the Parêd.”
