A POIGNANT exhibition commemorating 100 years since the end of the First World War will be held next week.

A two-day event will be held in the Free Library, Dolgellau, for the centenary of the end of the Great War.

The focus of the exhibition will be on the effect of the war on Dolgellau and the surrounding area.

A spokesperson said: “There will be an opportunity to taste some of the food the soldiers would have eaten in the trenches and the opportunity to knit socks to stave off trench foot.

“The exhibition will tell the stories of individuals who took part in the conflict, some of the men on the memorials who did not come back and others who survived. It will also relate the almost forgotten history of the Belgian refugees who found solace and comfort in the Dolgellau community.

“The stories of the military hospitals set up in the area will also be told as well as the tireless work of the people who supported the local men by organising food and clothing parcels for the servicemen.

“Photographs of individual servicemen and women will be on display, some of which have not seen the light of day for 100 years.”

The exhibition will be open on Friday, 9 November from 10.30am to 4.30pm and the next day from 10am to 2.30pm.
