Leisure centres in Porthmadog and Bala will reopen this week.

Byw’n Iach, set up last year by Gwynedd Council to manage the county’s leisure centres, will reopen those centres, and Caernarfon, this Thursday, but swimming pools will remain closed.

The Welsh Government gave the go-ahead for centres to reopen on Monday, 10 August, but time has been taken to put safety measures in place.

Byw’n Iach other sites – in Tywyn, Bro Ffestiniog, Pwllheli, Dolgellau, Barmouth, Penygroes, Bangor and Bethesda – are yet to announce when they will reopen.

A spokesperson said: “Byw’n Iach centres are reopening.

“On Thursday, 20 August, our centres will begin reopening to our members.

“Initially, we will be reopening the centres in Caernarfon, Porthmadog and Bala.

“You must register to return to the centre. This will include access to fitness classes, fitness rooms and outdoor sport facilities. Clubs should contact the centre directly to discuss bookings.”

When the three centres reopen, they will give users access to fitness classes, fitness rooms and outdoor sport facilities.

Swimming pools will not reopen at the moment.

“As we have stated previously, our centres will be opening with new restrictions and rules in place to ensure the safety of you and our staff,” a spokesperson said.

Harlech Leisure Centre, which is community-run, say their pool will remain closed until 1 October.

Staff and volunteers are working throughout the closure, making a number of repairs and improvements.

Jodie Pritchard, volunteer director for Harlech Ardudwy Leisure, said: “The WCVA and Landfill Disposals Tax Community Scheme have funded quite a bit of the work.

“Karl Nash, Dylan and Joy Hughes and Toni Howden have been putting in lots of hours painting and doing other things like ceiling repairs in the pool, and Idris Contract Flooring have just put in new reception flooring.

“Many of these improvements are intended to make cleaning surfaces

and flooring more efficient. It has also been 10 years since the last major redecoration works.”

Jodie added: “We would like to thank our community and customers for their patience and we are looking forward to welcoming them back soon, with a fresh looking centre.”
