An Aberystwyth man’s new book has hit shop shelves – and the hands of actress Miriam Margolyes.
For the past few years, Rhys B Davies has been working on Atlas of Imagined Places, a fully illustrated world atlas that only depicts locations from fiction, mythology and popular culture.
From Hogwarts to Gotham City, Atlantis to Margaritaville, you’ll find them all in there.
A launch event took place at Stanfords bookshop in London.
“I was also fortunate enough to present a copy to Miriam Margolyes during her recent signing event at Waterstones Aberystwyth, at the invitation of the store staff,” said Rhys.
Explaining his background in writing, he added: “I managed to self-publish my first novel in 2012, a time-travel work named Timewreck Titanic.
“Growing up I developed a mutual love of fiction and geography - I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a writer, but I also loved pouring over maps and reading any books I could get my hands on, and if they had maps inside then even better!
“With this in mind, you can imagine that this project was a perfect match for me.”
Rhys got involved with it some years ago “by chance”.
“I stumbled upon a project named ‘Fake Britain’ - a map of fictional locales within Great Britain - run by a website named Londonist. The man behind both them was Matt Brown, who welcomed people to send in suggestions.
“I responded in such quantity that Matt invited me to come on board as co-creator of ‘Fake Britain’, which was a massive honour. That map went down well enough that we subsequently collaborated on ‘Unreal City’, a map showing fictional locations and residences within London, and afterwards we decided to try taking the concept global.
“The result is the Atlas of Imagined Places, which contains about 5,000 locations drawn from sources all across the world and every culture we could find – locations from myth, legend, fiction, pop-culture and so on.”
