CEREDIGION County Council has launched a six-week public consultation in relation to the Rhydeinon household waste site, near Llanarth.
The current contract for the household waste site has been extended to November to allow the council time to consider future options for the site, and a public consultation process has been launched to inform these considerations.
Rhydeinon is one of four household waste sites in the county; the others are placed in the Glanyrafon Industrial Estate, near Aberystwyth; Cilmaenllwyd, near Cardigan; and another site in Lampeter.
The Cabinet decision follows a review of waste management infrastructure, an action stated in the council’s Waste Management strategy for 2014-18.
Bryan Davies, county councillor for Llanarth, has launched a local campaign to save Rhydeinon waste site, urging regular users to take part in this six-week consultation process.
Cllr Davies said: “The Rhydeinon waste site is an essential resource for communities across mid Ceredigion, helping people to get rid of their household waste. The nearest facility for residents in Llanarth is 15 miles away in Lampeter, and any decision to close the site at Rhydeinon would lead to a significant increase in transport costs to local residents.
“This type of self-service centre is a vital resource and in the long run it saves the council money. I also fear the ever-increasing problem of fly-tipping near Llanarth will become worse if this closure takes place, and I shall do all I can to persuade Ceredigion County Council to keep the site open.”
