Aberystwyth University has slipped more than 20 places down the UK rankings in the latest edition of The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide.

Last year, Aberystwyth was ranked 42 out of the 133 universities surveyed for the influential guide, rising from 48 the year before.

In the overall Times and Sunday Times rankings for 2027 however, Aberystwyth University has now slipped to 63 in the UK.

The institution has also lost its third place Welsh ranking, slipping to fourth.

Cardiff remains the top ranked Welsh university, with Swansea University 2nd and Bangor University - which leapfrogged Aberystwyth into third place in the guide – named the overall Welsh University of the Year for 2027.

Bangor University also took the title of University of the Year for Sustainability 2027, an accolade won by Aberystwyth University last year.

In the 2025 guide, Aberystwyth University was ranked 39th overall in the UK, but is now placed 22 places lower.

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027 provides the definitive rankings for UK universities and the most comprehensive overview of higher education in Britain, making use of the latest data.
