Madam,
One of the central planks of the Welsh Assembly Government’s strategy to deliver care as been declared “unsustainable” by major research carried out into social care in England.
Expecting relatives, friends and even neighbours to provide more of even the most intimate of care to relieve the burden on the statutory services is wholly unrealistic. Pension age is rising and as the population ages so more carers are elderly themselves and couples are often mutually dependent upon one another.
The county council also needs to admit, before further large sums of money are spent, that Extra Care Housing on the Plas Morolwg site is a non-starter due to the poor access and isolated, windswept location.
In 2014, Social Services commissioned a report from an ‘expert’ which helped the shift in thinking from residential home to extra care.
In 2015, the same ‘expert’ wrote an article stating that the extra care phenomenon was over, found to be more expensive than residential care and didn’t always meet needs, especially with regard to dementia sufferers.
Perhaps it is not too late to address this issue in some small way; the county council say they have no serious buyers for Bodlondeb.
Now the public has been made aware of the cost of purchasing the site for the Canolfan Rheidol offices, perhaps they would look at the economics of clearing the Bodlondeb site and building from scratch a state the art residential home.
Yours etc,
George Holloway, Rhoshendre, Waunfawr, Aberystwyth.
