Madam,
I am writing to add my ‘two pennorth’ to the disasters which afflict some of our town’s bus stops as stated in the Cambrian News letters pages.
The version I have been given by the drivers is that the stop is too short - not allowing the bus to be pulled in closely to the high-rise kerbs or have enough room to manoeuvre out again into traffic due to the closeness of the roundabout.
This also applies to the stop on the opposite side near the public toilets which has a pull in, again with its high-rise kerbs, again too short but also too near the roundabout plus the (unnecessary?) traffic lights for the newly built stores.
And what about the shelter, which has been there for years, but shouldn’t be used as it hasn’t got a flag designating it as an official stop? As far as I can remember it still has the timetables on the walls - what if strangers to the town view it?
If it shouldn’t be used then why don’t the council remove it and save any potential passengers the embarrassment of seeing a wanted bus go sailing past!
Having said all that, I would say that 99 per cent of the drivers do in fact stop for people wishing to get off/on at these stops but gently warn us that it’s difficult do so. They’re a fine lot our local drivers!
The council gave planning permission for these stores to be built, against the wishes of a lot of townspeople and private businesses, but they’re certainly in the wrong place.
Did the council check the detailed plans of where the road, roundabout, traffic lights, bus stops would be going to make sure there was adequate space for it all?
Before allowing the stores into our town, did they think about the much-loved day care centre and private housing being demolished to achieve ‘more footfall in the town’.
This was never a good plan but it’s done now so why can’t members of our council - who spend our money - get its act together and sort out this stupid mess which is entirely of their own making?
Yours etc,
Sue Slocombe, Llanon.
