ABERYSTWYTH University is to cancel all teaching from 4pm today due to the high winds caused by Storm Ophelia.The university's sports centre, Blas Padarn (Llanbadarn), Thomas Parry Library (Llanbadarn), IBERS Bach, Students’ Union, Arts Centre, Brynamlwg, Gogerddan and the Old College will all close from 4pm todayThe Hugh Owen Library will close at 6pm today and reopen at 8am tomorrow. Three schools in Ceredigion have also closed early today as forecasters say high winds could pose a 'danger to life’. T Llew Jones School in Brynhoffnant and Aberporth School will be closing at 2pm today, with staff at Penparc School asking parents to collect their children from 1pm.Ysgol Bro Sion Cwilt also closed its doors at 1.45pm.Ceredigion County Council says it is monitoring weather developments and will close schools if necessary.
A spokesperson added: "Headteachers have the discretion and the Council’s support to close individual schools to protect the wellbeing of pupils and staff should it be necessary."
The west coast is set to see hurricane-force winds of up to 80mph with forecasters at the Met Office warning that it could pose a danger to life as well as bringing travel chaos, power cuts and a loss of mobile phone coverage.
The warning has been upgraded from yellow to amber this morning, with the Chief Forecaster saying: "Flying debris is likely, such as tiles blown from roofs, as well as large waves around coastal districts with beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.
"This leads to the potential for injuries and danger to life."
The weather warning is set to run from midday to midnight, with the strongest winds expected around 6-7pm this evening.
