STAFF at the Urdd site at Llyn Tegid will be given St David’s Day off as an official holiday.
Urdd Gobaith Cymru has announced that 1 March will be an official holiday for every member of their staff in celebration of St David’s Day.
The Urdd’s abiding aim is to celebrate our unique identity as Welsh people and in the current fragile political climate, this aim has become more prominent than ever.
According to Siân Lewis, chief executive at Urdd Gobaith Cymru: “The decision is an important milestone for us. As a national organisation that encourages children and young people to be proud of their country, their language and culture, it is important that we lead by example by recognising and celebrating our national identity.
“In the current climate, we must be progressive and confident in our identity and St David’s Day is an integral part of our history and culture. A day free from work gives our staff the opportunity to celebrate the occasion with their family and friends in their local communities or at national events.
“Therefore, I am very proud to announce that St David’s Day will be an official holiday for all Urdd staff from 2019 onwards.”
Very few countries across the world don’t celebrate national days with a holiday.
