URGENT action has been demanded to improve safety at a “lethal” junction in Aberystwyth after a pedestrian was injured in a collision with a car.
Pedestrians are said to take their life in their hands when trying to cross Thespian Street at the junction where Northgate Street and North Parade meet.
Last Tuesday the road was closed for nearly half an hour after a woman was injured.
The accident led both people who regularly cross the road and motorists to raise concerns that a serious accident is “only a matter of time” away.
Student Shaun Donnelly said: “Pedestrians don’t always look to the right before crossing and drivers can’t always judge intent - it is a perfect mixture for an accident.”
Aberystwyth resident John Wilding who crosses the road regularly, said the junction is “lethal”.
“You have traffic coming from three different directions, including behind you,” he added.
“And it is hard to tell where things are coming from.
“I regularly both drive and walk at the scene of the incident and many times I’ve had to slam on my brakes so as not to hit a pedestrian on the way around the bend."
Aberystwyth councillor and Ceredigion council’s Cabinet member for Transport Alun Williams said the junction was a “clear risk”.
“One obvious solution would be to move the pedestrian crossing point away from the corner and a few yards up Thespian Street so that pedestrians only have to look one way when crossing and cars have rounded the corner so can see them better," he said.
