THE CO-OWNER of Ceredigion’s first veal farm near Aberystwyth has said she hopes to change people’s perception of how the meat is farmed.
Mearina James, along with husband Alun and son Aled Owen, launched Penrhyn Veal, based in Penrhyncoch, just before Christmas with the company officially opened by Gwawr Parry of Hybu Cig Cymru.
Selling out of all ‘festive boxes’, which contained a selection of veal cuts including sausages and burgers, Mrs James said she hopes to meet a growing demand for the meat.
Mrs James, who also runs the Tan Shop in Eastgate, said: “We did a bit of market research and found there was nowhere which sold veal in Aberystwyth.
“We spoke to butchers and they said they didn’t sell it because there was no demand, but it hasn’t been marketed or advertised effectively. We tried it with some pubs and restaurants and it has all sold out — we didn’t realise there was so much demand."
