AN ABERYSTWYTH father-of-three had been drinking for “more than seven hours” when he attempted to cross a dual carriageway in Spain and was killed by a car, an inquest has heard.

Eifion Gwynne, 41, died after being hit by a Fiat Punto on the A7 Cadiz to Barcelona road in the Spanish town of Estepona, near Malaga at just after 5am on Saturday, 22 October, an inquest into his death heard in Aberystwyth on Wednesday.

A popular self-employed electrician and rugby player, Mr Gwynne was involved in the incident after attending the funeral of family friend Emrys Thomas.

The inquest heard from no witnesses as the death occurred outside its jurisdiction, and Ceredigion coroner Peter Brunton was left to rely on translated documents from Spanish authorities to reach a verdict.

The inquest heard that while Mr Gwynne had had a “considerable amount to drink”, he was “coherent and capable” when he got into a taxi to return to where he was staying.

No evidence was heard or taken at the inquest as to how Mr Gwynne ended up on the wrong side of the dual carriageway, forcing him to cross it.

He was hit by a car travelling at around 50mph, leaving multiple serious chest injuries.

Recording a verdict of death by misadventure, Ceredigion coroner Peter Brunton expressed sympathy for the family over “this dreadful catastrophe”.
