A “vigilante binman” from Aberystwyth has been cleaning up the streets.
Tom Stoker, 20, spent three days cleaning up the road from Aberystwyth to Borth.
As a film and TV student at Aberystwyth University, Tom decided to document his trek and post it on YouTube, titled My Rubbish Walk to Borth - you can watch Tom’s video below.
Tom said: “The role of a vigilante binman was at times a thankless job. I had to be hyperaware of my surroundings and throughout the walk a couple of people stopped along the road to tell me to be careful, and I understand their concern.”
The “freelance binman” managed to collect around 15 to 20 Ikea bags of rubbish, including a Lucozade bottle from around 2004, a Pepsi can from around 1990 and an inflatable kayak.
Tom told the Cambrian News: “The reason I made the video was because I was trying to make the road a nicer place to be for everyone.
“I think, in a car the amount of rubbish on the side of the road isn’t a big deal as you’re going so fast that you don’t really notice it.
“It’s only when you walk, run or cycle on it that you properly see the situation.
“I’m a big fan of getting places under my steam, as in journeys where you would think you would need car to get there, I like to do them on foot or by bike.
“I see so much rubbish on the side of the roads doing these journeys that I thought I could make this video to highlight the issue.”
Tom began his three-day mission on 21 March.
Equipped with three Ikea bags and a tripod, Tom had no help to complete the six-mile journey. Every time he filled the three bags, he would return to the bins by his Aberystwyth University campus residence.
“There are some big bins where I live. So as the start it was not very far to walk back, but by the end it was four or five miles to get back to the bins,” Tom said.
“That’s why it took so long really.”
In the video, Tom comments: “When I set off on my walk three days ago, I thought I would be stood here on Borth beach and the roads I just walked across would be completely transformed.
“I’ll be honest with you, that’s not happened. It’s still a horrible little road and there’s still a lot of rubbish out there – I’ve barely scratched the surface.
“But when I walk down that road now, I think I’ll see a bit of rubbish but what I’ll think in my head is, this is 15 or 20 Ikea bags, a car windscreen and an inflatable Kayak better off than how I found it.”
