RESIDENTS in a village between Cardigan and Newcastle Emlyn were said this week to be “literally risking their lives every day” because the main road is so dangerous.
The situation is so bad in Cwm Cou that youngsters are having to be driven to school because parents are worried in case they are involved in an accident.
The road through the village is used by lorries avoiding the bridge at Cenarth, but has a sharp blind bend and a narrow bridge near the school.
Villagers are also becoming increasingly concerned by the speed at which traffic travels through Cwm Cou.
Plaid Cymru AM Elin Jones joined calls this week from local councillor Lyndon Lloyd and Ysgol Drewen headteacher Rhianydd James for improved safety measures to protect pedestrians.
Miss Jones said: “It’s a real concern to me that this rural area of Ceredigion seems to pose more of a risk to people than those living in built-up, urban areas due to a lack of consideration for pedestrians.”
Cllr Lloyd: “The county council now states that cutbacks have led to a failure in remedying this situation, but the residents and Beulah Community Council are now asking what is the price of danger to the residents, who literally risk their lives every day in this village?”
Mrs James said: “The school feels that it is paramount that safety measures are put in place to safeguard the children living within this community.”
