Places are already full for this year’s Cambrian News Aberystwyth charity 10k race, with over a month to go.
But Aberystwyth Athletics Club organisers are still looking for volunteers – including route marshals, people to hand out medals and water at the finish line, and helpers at the bag drop.
It is the 21st race this year and there were 750 places for the event.
The 2019 race takes place on Sunday, 8 December, starting at 1pm near Aberystwyth bandstand. There is also a junior one-mile Prom Dash at 11.30am.
There will be prizes for, amongst others, the fastest three males and females; first veteran males in age groups from 40-plus; first veteran female in age groups from 35-plus; also first male and female under 20.
There will also be a trophy for the winning team of at least three runners. As this is historically a ‘business team’ prize, team members must be connected by working for the same company.
There is a separate prize for the first three past the finish line from any sports club, whether affiliated to UKA or not.
Everyone who completes the race will receive a special cast medal courtesy of the Cambrian News.
Race numbers are being sent out by post this year to avoid congestion at the bandstand, where the race starts.
The junior race has entry on the day only and the minimum age is seven years.
The course records are: male - Carwyn Jones, Cardiff AAC, 32:13 (2015); female - Carys Hughes, Les Croupiers, 37:13 (2015).
The race was first held in 1999. Since then it has grown into one of the most popular flat road races in mid Wales.
The Cambrian News adopted the race 10 years ago – as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations – to ensure its survival, and the race has gone from strength to strength since then.
The race is now organised by Aberystwyth Athletics Club and Carl Williams, and the Cambrian News is the main sponsor.
Thousands of runners have taken part over the years, raising over £200,000 in total for charity so far.
Cambrian News managing editor Bev Thomas said: “This has become such an important and popular charity event in the town.
“We are hoping lots of runners will raise cash for charities close to their hearts. But it’s also a chance to get fit, and run in a great community event.”
All profits from the entry fees go to local charities and organisations. But runners can also raise money for the charity of their choice.
You can download sponsor forms on the Aberystwyth Athletics Club website.
If anyone is able to volunteer, contact Anita Worthing on anita.[email protected]
Also, if any local businesses are interested in sponsoring any of the prizes or race expenses, again contact Anita.
