A GROUP of volunteers hope to take over the running of Llandysul Library next March.

After Ceredigion County Council chiefs confirmed they would bankroll the facility, the Llandysul Library Supporters Group announced their plans this week.

Spokesperson Lesley Parker said they hoped to keep the library open for two-and-a-half days each week, having been promised the services of a professional librarian on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

“We feel it’s going to be good for the community,” she told the Cambrian News.

“We hope we can do more things to encourage more people to use the library – and also to make it the community hub it should be.”

The move represents a remarkable turnaround for a facility which seemed certain to close as part of Ceredigion County Council’s cost-cuitting drive two years ago.

Supporters were then told that in order to keep the library open they would have to raise thousands of pounds.

But, in a major U-turn that was rubber-stamped by members of the Corporate Resources, Overview and Scrutiny Committee last month, County Hall are now offering volunteers the use of Ceredigion Library Service, as well as use of the building along with training and wifi.

“It is a big difference from their original offer two years ago,” said Ms Parker.

“We recently held a meeting at the Porth Hotel to update potential volunteers and they seemed quite positive that we could run the library."
