Madam,
Whilst we in the UK are focusing on party politics, the desperate situation facing the Syrian people and the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe continues.
UNICEF figures show over six million people have fled the war in Syria. Almost 2,500,000 are children. An estimate from Save the Children suggests 26,000 unaccompanied child refugees arrived in Europe in 2015.
The government has closed the Dubs scheme that would have helped unaccompanied children to be brought to the UK. The government has turned their backs on these children, but we don’t have to.
With two elections in the coming weeks, we at Aberaid urge voters to consider candidates’ views on refugees. Ceredigion MP Mark Williams has been very supportive of Aberaid. And our previous county council was fantastic in its role as a trailblazer authority, welcoming refugees from Syria.
We are hopeful that our newly elected representatives will want to continue their good work in this area, but let’s not leave it to chance.
Yours etc,
Lindsay Cardwell, Aberaid.
